ELDER ABUSE

My one hundred-year-old grandmother has years of wisdom and experience, but every day, she becomes less and less able to handle her own affairs. She, like many seniors, is an obvious target for abuse, fraud, and financial exploitation. The perpetrators are endless: contractors, telemarketers, nursing home facilities and other elder care providers, professionals, and phone and utility companies, just to name a few. Unfortunately, this list also includes family members and friends as well, who abuse rights and privileges granted to them under legal processes like powers of attorney and guardianship appointments.

My practice extends beyond estate planning and elder law services for seniors. I strive to protect seniors in all facets of their lives. Quite often, this means handling consumer protection claims against large companies who have exploited my elderly clients. It means litigating against nursing homes for neglect and abuse. It means contesting wills and other documents and contracts where my elderly clients entered into such agreements unknowingly, under duress or through undue influence. Even if the abuse, fraud, or exploitation is not discovered until after the elderly person's death, in many instances the elderly's heirs and personal representative will have the right to remedies.
